Representativeness is the extent to which an event is representative of its parent population. As such, when we rely on a representativeness heuristic, we often wrongly judge that something is more representative than it actually is.

The representativeness heuristic is a mental shortcut that we use when making judgments about the probability. Specifically, when we are trying to assess how likely it is that an event or object A belongs to class B, we tend to make this judgment based on how closely A resembles B (or how representative we believe A is for B). The representative heuristic is when you organize objects by their similarities and categorize them around a prototype. The representativeness heuristic describes when we estimate the likelihood of an event by comparing it to an existing prototype in our minds. Representativeness heuristic | BehavioralEconomics.com | The The representativeness heuristic is a heuristic (rule of thumb) that has been demonstrated to be a natural part of human cognition. Like any other rule of thumb, it has pluses and minuses. Another type of heuristic is a representativeness heuristic, a mental shortcut which helps us make a decision by comparing information to our mental prototypes. For example, if someone was to Heuristics and Biases (Tversky and Kahneman 1974) Heuristics are used to reduce mental effort in decision making, but they may lead to systematic biases or errors in judgment.

Availability Heuristic vs Representative Heuristic. Representative heuristic is where people use existing memories to identify associated characteristics of an object or a person. By contrast, the availability heuristic is where we use existing memories to identify the likelihood of an outcome occurring.

Representativeness heuristic is also employed when subjects estimate the probability of a specific parameter of a sample. If the parameter highly represents the population, the parameter is often given a high probability. This estimation process usually ignores the impact of the sample size. This paper explores a heuristic—representativeness—according to which the subjective probability of an event, or a sample, is determined by the degree to which it: (i) is similar in essential characteristics to its parent population; and (ii) reflects the salient features of the process by which it is generated. This heuristic is explicated in a series of empirical examples demonstrating Cognitive algebra versus representativeness heuristic - Volume 19 Issue 1.
