In recent studies, it was found that in areas infected with R. ondatrae, the population of amphibian limb malformations was much higher than Ribeiroia — ბრტყელი ჭიების პარაზიტისებრთა გვარი ტრემატოდების Ribeiroia ondatrae cercariae were fixed in 10% neutral buffered formalin for 1-2 hours. Parazita (Ribeiroia ondatrae) által indukált végtag-rendellenesség Pseudacris regilla békánál A Ribeiroia ondatrae a Ribeiroia nemzetségbe tartozó parazita faj, mely vélhetően a kétéltűek végtag-rendellenességeiért felelős, különösen a hiányzó, torz vagy számon felüli lábakért. The disease is named proventriculitis. Infections with R. ondatrae lead to malformations in amphibian development. Thus this parasite acts teratogenically, e.g., up to 50% of the leopard frogs (Rana pipiens) in North America show such a disease. Ribeiroia ondatrae is — for part of its life — an oversized head with a whip tail. In ponds, lakes and puddles, it torpedoes into tadpoles, embedding itself near where a frog’s legs will emerge.

Since their widespread appearance in the mid-1990s, malformed amphibians have evoked fear, as well as fascination within the scientific and public communities. Recent evidence from field and laboratory studies has implicated infection by a digenetic trematode – Ribeiroia ondatrae – as an important cause of such deformities.

Geographic Distribution. Ribeiroia ondatrae is widely distributed across the USA, including records from 22 species in 37 states (Johnson and McKenzie 2008). Most records of Ribeiroia-associated malformations have been reported from California, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.Less is known about the distribution of Ribeiroia in Canada and Central -- Created using Powtoon -- Free sign up at http://www.powtoon.com/youtube/ -- Create animated videos and animated presentations for free. The miracidia develop into rediae which eventually produce cercariae. The cercariae swim through the water and encyst on the limb buds of tadpoles. Ribeiroia is a genus of parasites in the class Trematoda, phylum Platyhelminthes. Currently three species and one subspecies of Ribeiroia are recognized: R. ondatrae in North America, R. marini in the Caribbean, R. m. guadeloupensis on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, and R. congolensis in Africa (Johnson et al. 2004).
